Adeje Holiday Resort - Tenerife
Just a few kilometres inland from southern Tenerife's main coastal resorts lies the pretty town of Adeje. This popular town has a real sense of heritage which is displayed in its historical buildings and inherent Canarian culture.
The town was the first place that Spanish invaders settled simply due to the superiority of its water supply. Nowadays however, Adeje has far more to offer its visitors with its tree-lined streets, interesting array of shops, bars and restaurants as well as some well-known landmarks.
One such landmark is the famous Barranco del Infierno, or "Hell's Ravine", the walk winds it's way into the ravine. Expect superb panoramic views early on the walk, and a variety of flora and fauna. The highlight of the walk for many is arriving at the magnificent spectacle - the Barranco del Infierno waterfall a spectacle of nature which really must be seen. Covering an area of over 500 hectares its steep walls, lush vegetation, and 200 meter waterfall are said to hide the funeral caves of the mysterious Gaunchos, Tenerife's indigenous inhabitants.
Other historical places of interest include the churches of Santa Ursula and the convent of Guadalupe and San Pablo as well as the sixteenth-century Fortress Casa Fuerte.
Alongside these natural wonders and authentic monuments, the town of Adeje has a thriving café culture with an excellent selection of bars and restaurants which are popular with locals and visitors alike. During the day one can relax at a pavement café and enjoy a café con leche, or maybe a refreshing beer, in the cool shade of the laurel trees.
In the evening the town really comes alive as people flock to the well-known, reasonably priced restaurants "oasis" which serve a selection of delicious Canarian food including grilled chicken with papas arragudas, the wrinkly salted potatoes served with mouth-watering mojo sauce. The town often hosts fabulous fiestas when a carnival atmosphere fills the streets and traditional celebrations take place in the main square. |
